MEDIT Meet the Author Series features top authors to discuss their latest works in the exquisite historic building of Süleymaniye Salis Madrasa. In the first event of the series, we will host Prof. Tahsin Görgün to talk about his new book Historicism on December 14 at 2 pm. The event will be in Turkish.
Professor Görgün is currently the head of the Philosophy Department at Istanbul 29 Mayıs University. He received his PhD from Freie Universität Berlin in usul al-fiqh and philosophy in 1995. He has been associated with ISAM research centre as a senior research fellow and executive board member. From 2005 to 2007, he was a visiting professor at Goethe University and the University of Vienna. His main research interests focus on usul al-fiqh, Islamic intellectual history concentrating on Transoxiana (Ma warā' al‐Nahr) and the Ottoman period, Qur'anic studies, Ottoman-European relations, Ottoman influences on Modern West, German idealism, hermeneutics, as well as various themes of philosophy such as language, knowledge, ethics and society.
Görgün has widely published on these topics in journal articles and chapters of edited volumes. He authored monographs including "Sprache, Handlung und Norm" (1998) in German, “Meaning and Interpretation” and “The Power of Divine Word” (2003), "On Civilization" (2019) in Turkish. He is the recipient of “The Intellectual of the Year” award by The Turkish Authors' Association for his book on Ottoman thought (2020).
Professor Görgün has also been affiliated with the Alliance of Civilizations institute as a visiting faculty since its establishment.
