The Alliance of Civilizations Institute and the International Relations Department of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta jointly organized a seminar on Islam and Civilization on May 23, 2023. The seminar was attended by around 30 undergraduate students from the International Relations Department of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta as part of their international exposure program.
The seminar featured presentations from Dr. Vahdettin Işık and Dr. Önder Küçükural from our institute, and Dr. Ratih Herningtyas and Sidiq Ahmadi from Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta.
Dr. Işık gave a presentation on the recent intellectual and political history of the region. Dr. Küçükural's presentation was on argumentation theory and the project of developing a new debate format based on the tradition of ādāb al-baḥth wa al-munāẓarah.
Dr. Herningtyas and Sidiq Ahmadi talked about the Indonesian political system and its recent history. They discussed the challenges and opportunities facing Indonesia as a Muslim-majority democracy.
The seminar was well-received by the students who actively took part in the Q&A session of the event. They appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Islam and civilization from experts from Türkiye and Indonesia.
